I work with individuals and groups to establish nonprofit corporations. I help individuals and groups to:

  • Choose a business name that is legally available in your state and file for an Employer Identification Number (EIN).

  • Prepare and file your articles of incorporation with your state's corporate filing office, and pay a filing fee.

  • Create bylaws that will dictate how the corporation will be operated.

  • Appoint an initial board of directors.

  • Hold the first meeting of the board of directors.

  • Apply for any licenses or permits that your corporation will need to operate in your state and local municipality.

I work with nonprofits and faith-based organizations on fund development, including:

  • Grant Writing: Identifying relevant grant opportunities, writing successful applications and managing grant funds.

  • Developing Nonprofit Leadership: Develop management and leadership skills for your organization’s executives and board.

  • Planned Giving: Engaging in successful, sustaining planned giving efforts in partnership with your organization’s donors

  • Strategic Communications: Telling the story of your organization at the right time to the right audience.

I work to identify strategies that will best enable your nonprofit to advance its mission. I also work with nonprofit executives, staff, and board members to engage them in the process, so they become committed to measurable goals, approve priorities for implementation, and also commit to revisiting the organization’s strategies on an ongoing basis as the organization's internal and external environments change. I work with many nonprofits by helping them identify their nonprofit’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, in what is commonly called a “SWOT” analysis. Looking at external as well as internal factors (such as your own nonprofit's staff capacity to accomplish its goals).

I work as a Community Engagement Subject Matter Expert. His approach to nonprofit governance is built on participatory principles, that move beyond the board of directors as the sole decision-making body regarding governance. I work from a framework in which the responsibility for nonprofit governance is shared across the organization, including the organization’s key community stakeholders: its constituents and community, staff, and the board.  I also work with groups utilizing principles of participatory decision-making, self-determination (Kujichagulia) , genuine partnership, and community-level decision making.

As a community economic development Subject Matter Expert, I focus on creating inclusive local economies, developing nourishing livelihood opportunities, building on local resources and capacities, increasing community control and ownership, enhancing the health of the environment, and encouraging community resilience.

I work with private, non-profit organizations CDCs, including faith-based organizations and Tribal organizations to provide subject matter expertise to address the economic needs of low-income individuals and families through the creation of sustainable business development and employment opportunities.  I also work to create or expand businesses, create new jobs for individuals with low incomes, and leverage funding investments in communities.

I work with grassroots nonprofit groups who are or have an interest in working to organize residents in the fight against involuntary displacement.

I work with nonprofits, CDC's and resident organizations to get in front of the gentrification issue.

I assist organizations in understanding the critical issues that make neighborhoods vulnerable to gentrification.

I also work to increase the supply of more publicly subsidized housing and, to a lesser extent, market-rate housing.  I work to develop community land trusts and tenant protections like anti-eviction ordinances and property tax rebates which has proven very effective in regions around the United States.
